DC Comics, a stand-alone entity of Warner Bros. has been restructured and relaunched as DC Entertainment. Warner Bros. denies that the move is a direct response to Disney's acquistion of Marvel stating that the creation of DC Entertainment is the result of a two year process. According to the press release the new company's purpose is to "fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms."
Diane Nelson, former president of Warner Premiere (Warner Bros. direct-to-video division) has been appointed president of DC Entertainment and will report directly to Jeff Rubinov, President of Warner Brothers Pictures Group. Nelson has also overseen the Harry Potter franchise since 1999 which has generated billions of dollars in revenue for Warner Bros. Former head of DC Comics, Paul Levitz, will remain with DC Entertainment as a writer and consultant.
With Batman being the only stable franchise in DC's portfolio this latest move seems like it will provide them with the stability needed to loosen Marvel's stronghold on the superhero, comic book-turned-movie genre. DC Entertainment is wasting no time in rolling out projects. Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox and John Malkovich is scheduled for a June 2010 release. Green Lantern, with Ryan Reynolds in the lead, is scheduled for a second quarter 2011 release. And The Losers, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, began principal photography in July. This new commitment to superhero films implies that DC Entertainment will definitely make producing and distributing these films a priority so stay tuned.
