Chris Brown Fan Catches Wal-Mart Red Handed

Posted by Media Mogul On 7:10 AM 0 comments

The blackballing of Chris' latest CD has been the subject of much conversation over the past few days. Brown's fans were twittering him last week to say stores weren't stocking the CD, Brown was throwing fits and tantrums on Twitter and went to a Wal-Mart store himself to check. After claiming they didn't have his CD, Billboard did some investigative reporting saying that stores were actually frustrated that they had a surplus of CDs due to extremely poor sales. Well one fan decided to get all Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Gadget on them and paid a visit to a local Wal-Mart in Virginia with her cam in tow. Peep what she found after the jump.

After Chris Brown took to Twitter for a profanity-laced tirade about stores not carrying his newest CD, Graffiti, Billboard decided to do some investigating. Turns out Breezy may have been wrong. Get the full scoop after the jump.

"He [Chris Brown] also noted specifically that he "JUST WAS AT WALMART IN Wallingford CT,844 north colony.. the didnt even have my album in the back... not on shelves, saw for myself."

A survey and store visits find that Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Trans World, Newbury Comics are all carrying the Brown record and sources say that his album received widespread distribution and promotion by his label, Jive Records, and his distributor, Sony Music Entertainment. Jive shipped over 400,000 units of "Graffiti," and also had it positioned in prime stores space at all key accounts, according to sources. In fact, sources suggest that Jive may have overshipped his record, as sales are slow.

"Not only am I carrying it, I am over carrying it, because it isn't selling," says the head of purchasing at one large chain. "I wish I could return it." He says the album's first week sales only reached 40% of expectations. At 27-unit Newbury Comics, Carl Mello head of purchasing, echoes that sentiment. "We have it; it's not selling much."

He says the chain never even considered boycotting Brown -- an accusation leveled by the artist on Twitter. Brown pleaded guilty to charges in connection with his attack of former girlfriend Rihanna in February, just before the Grammy Awards show. "We never considered not bringing it in," Mello says. "If we stopped bringing in records from every unsavory character that puts out an album, there would be tumbleweed floating around our stores.

When ordering the record, Mello says he took into account Brown's altercation with Rihanna from a sales perspective, only. After saying, "Let's see what has happened with his sales since the incident," Mello reports that "Exclusive," which was issued in November 2007, sold 11 copies chainwide in October 2008, 8 copies in November, 5 units un January, 4 in February, 2 in March, and 0 copies in April, May and June. "From July until now, we have sold 3 copies," Mello adds. "When you see an artist is going to release a new album and then you go back and see these kind of sales, alarm bells go off. You don't feel over confident about bringing in a lot of records."

Nevertheless, "we brought in the new album because you know you are going to sell some," Mello says. "We let the consumer vote on it."

And so far, consumers aren't flocking to stores to vote on behalf of Brown. Sources project that Brown sold about 100,000 units last week, well below the 150,000-175,000 units he was expected to sell. Mello says that the album is probably about the No. 40 best-selling title at the chain.

Even Wal-Mart -- which was singled out by Brown on Twitter as one of the so-called merchants boycotting his record because the Wallingford, Conn., store didn't have it in stock -- says they are carrying the Brown album. "We are surprised at the comments on Twitter, since all Walmart stores carried the CD since its release, including the Wallingford store mentioned in the post. This store had in fact sold through their copies over the weekend. The majority of our stores are showing today they have copies on hand." Likewise Billboard found plenty of Brown in stock at Best Buy in Union Square and on Broadway by Houston Street, in Manhattan, as well as at the J&R Music World superstore in downtown Manhattan. Jive declined to comment." (Source: Billboard)

Chris Brown Closes His Twitter Account

Posted by Media Mogul On 7:11 AM 0 comments

Looks like Chris Brown's team has returned from their 10 month vacation. Three days after his expletive laced rant about being blackballed, in which he told the industry to kiss his ass, Chris Brown has made the smartest PR decision since he assaulted his ex-girlfriend in February. Brown bid farewell to his 172,000+ followers by saying, "I WANNA THANK MY FANS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT. I LOVE YALL. GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Juelz Santana and Chris Brown team up again. Chris Brown repays the rapper for his guest appearance on the young singer's breakout debut single, "Run It" with his feature on the lead single from Juelz's 3rd studio album, Born To Lose, Built To Win. Chris Brown Tells The Industry To Kiss His Ass

Posted by Media Mogul On 12:03 PM 0 comments

Chris Brown is tired of playing nice boy. The bad boy rears his head again as he took to Twitter yesterday and told the entire industry to kiss his ass. Are those DV, anger management classes really helping? Check out his full statement after the jump.

Again, biting the hand that feeds you, the temper tantrums, Twitter outbursts, waiting until you were about to give a major televised interview and release your CD's first single to issue a poorly written apology, getting on national television and refusing to talk about the incident, and then going tit for tat with Rihanna after saying on Larry King Live that you would no longer address the issue aren't exactly going to have people rooting in your corner. This entire rant should be redirected towards his entire team, from his manager to his publicist to his label, as well as himself for messing up his own career.

Right after the incident you can get on jet skis, be photographed partying with a gaudy $300,000 OOPS! chain, get on YouTube and clown around with Bow Wow talking about you're not a monster, but it took you 6 months to release a formal apology. Followed very quickly by a televised interview and your new single. And you expect people to believe you're genuinely sorry, that this isn't all being done solely to save a career you somehow feel you're entitled to? And this whole little outburst seems to prove that the whole "I'm so sorry" act is just that, an act.

There has also been chatter suggesting Jive didn't ship large numbers of the album to many retailers for obvious reasons. So perhaps his fans taking pics of his CDs not being on shelves is because the few copies some major retailers received were sold out. That could be part of the problem. At the end of the day there's always iTunes and Amazon. I guess Chris' team is scrambling to save face and blame the lackluster sales on something. Why not the industry instead of Chris himself? In any event, telling the industry to kiss your ass isn't exactly going to inspire them to carry your CD, or invite you to do in-stores, or convince networks to allow you to perform, or convince awards committees to nominate you for your work.

Our advice CB? Fire your entire team. The way they have helped you handle this entire fiasco suggests they may not even be in your corner. Take a slice of humble pie. Really work on whatever anger management issues you may have. Take a year or two off and get yourself together.

Chris Brown's 20/20 Interview

Posted by Media Mogul On 12:49 PM 0 comments

Chris Brown's 20/20 interview with Robin Roberts aired last night. Not much was really said, as usual. Lots of apologizing, lots of generic blanket statements, lots of what we've already heard from him. This really seems like a last ditch effort to convince people that he is genuinely sorry to boost sales of his CD when it drops on Tuesday. And the fact that he continues to fight fire with fire, going tic for tat with Rihanna, makes it seem like those DV classes might not really have kicked in yet. If you're interested, check out the full interview after the jump.

You were removed from the BET Awards show when the Michael Jackson tribute was happening. As a supreme MJ fab, that had to hurt.

It was wack. I’ll keep it a hundred. The BET Awards was horrible. I was watching it, holding my face like, “Oh my God, this is wack.” I didn’t get it. Michael Jackson was such a big entertainer. And I’m not dissing any of the artists who did the songs. But I was expecting a lot more of energy for Michael. And BET Awards usually comes hard. I was exepecting them to have Usher, Omarion and even Justin. And I was expecting Ne-Yo to sance. They were so bent on getting me there that they messed up their own show. (Source: Rap Radar)

Where is his PR team? Are they on permanent vacation? Chris Brown should really be taking extra caution to be politically correct these days. Just because something is true doesn't mean it needs to be expressed. Some things are better left unsaid, especially when you need to be building bridges instead of burning them. The new issue of Vibe is on newsstands now.

Check out the interview excerpt after the jump. The full interview will air on ABC's 20/20 tonight at 10pm EST.

Chris Brown's team really must not love him. At this point the more he talks the more he continues to hurt himself. With each interview the lines appear more and more rehearsed and coached and his sincerity and motives become increasingly questionable. Brown has stated after each subsequent interview that he will no longer address the issue going forward only to line up more and more interviews as his album release date approaches. Our suggestion, just focus on the music. People might be more keen to move on if the whole back and forth between him and Rihanna would just cease. It all feels like a carefully planned promotional effort as opposed to a true attempt at redemption and a true desire to help others in similar situations.

Did Chris Brown Call Jay-Z A Cornball?

Posted by Media Mogul On 7:31 AM 0 comments

Last night during the 37th annual 2009 American Music Awards, Jay-Z took to the stage to accept the award for Favorite Hip Hop Male Artist. There is a lot of speculation the disgraced R&B singer dissed Jay by calling him a cornball during his acceptance speech. Get the full scoop after the jump.

At the very moment that Jay-Z took the stage Brown made the following comment on twitter:

Brown quickly removed the tweet which led to widespread speculation that the tweet was indeed directed towards the hip-hop legend. Apparently Chris was watching the show. During Alicia's set before the "cornball" comment he stated:

YESSIR.. FLII STYLZ ON ALICIA SET... dancer/choreographer/rapper..he killed it.. real ARTIST

Flii Stylz was the male dancer prominently featured during Alicia Keys' performance of "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart." So what do you think? Coincidence or catastrophe?

Rihanna's exclusive interview with 20/20 will air tonight at 10pm ET/PT.

We're not really sure what the purpose of this interview was considering he didn't really defend himself against the allegations made by Rihanna during aired segments of her interview with Diane Sawyer nor did he say anything he hasn't already said. However, he appeared vastly more well spoken than he did on his Larry King Live interview. What are your thoughts?
