Kandi Burrus - Fly Above [Live on Mo'Nique]

Posted by Media Mogul On 7:11 AM 0 comments

As we stated before we love this song. Kandi really did her thing. We admire her for forging ahead with such positivity despite all she's been through. The Fly Above EP was released earlier this week so make sure you pick it up. It features four other songs including "Trade Him In" featuring Gucci Mane and produced by Drumma Boy, "Must Be Good" produced by Jazze Pha, "I Like Him" produced by Nitti, and the Kuya Productions love song, "I Just Know" featuring Rick Ross and Rasheeda. You can snatch up a copy via iTunes.

Her latest album, B.L.O.G. (B*tches Love Online Gossip) will arrive in 2010. Make sure you show your love and support and fly above the haters. MDM Approved.

Kandi Burruss, the newest cast member of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" reality TV show, reflects on her first season on the show in between filming the reunion shows (part one airs Oct. 29): "People didn't really catch me in a lot of drama on the show. Me and the girls didn't really know each other that well for me to really involve myself in a lot of stuff that was going on. What you see is in my personal life, which is real." Burruss poses in the living room of her home in Fayetteville.

Check out the rest of Kandi's pad after the jump.

"I was raised in East Point, on the south side of town," shares Kandi. "Fayetteville is an affluent area that I always knew about and it's not far from where I grew up. I always wanted to have a house in a nice neighborhood; there are a lot of well-to-do African-American people here; it's a mixed community." The main house has four bedrooms, three baths and 2 1/2-baths; the guest house has two bedrooms and two baths.

"When Jagged Edge was here I felt like the mother hen, sometimes," admits Burruss. "I have always acted older than my age, I was the youngest member in Xscape, but I was not the youngest acting, I've always been about business and making things work." Pictured is the foyer.

Accomplished singer and songwriter Kandi Burruss poses with her Grammy in the living room of her home in Fayetteville.

"In the living room, I basically just told [Sonja Strayhand] the color scheme," shares Burruss, "she pretty much took over on that room. I found the black chair and helped find the right couches to fit with it. I found the vase in [the] Miami Design District, I just had to have it." Burruss credits Strayhand with helping her "realize you could have two different patterns that don't go together and make them come together."

"The stone floor tiles go all the way up the fireplace (in the living room)," notes Kandi. "It was brick before, if you notice, even though they're all similar in color the way the tiles were laid in each room varies; but it all comes together."

"When I bought the house I was managing Jagged Edge," reflects Burruss. "They were living with me -- all but one -- I bought the house but didn't have the money to furnish it. So it was this big empty house [with] furniture in the den and a couple [of] bedroom sets. At the time I was 19, they were 20 or whatever, we just had all kinds of swim parties, just hanging out. That was at the beginning of their career, and me and Xscape was doing our thing."

From day one on the show Burruss insisted: "I am not going to try to put on for you just so that I'm making good television, that's how I looked at it." Pictured is the portrait she envisioned for the "Alter Ego" segment of the show. She notes: "The girls (her 'Real Housewives' cast members) are trying to straighten up, they don't like how they were portrayed [in the show]. So everybody wants to become Mother Teresa now." Burruss laughs and adds: "I'm like OK, I wonder how that's going."

"I totally redid my kitchen, I tore out cabinets, installed granite countertops and bamboo floors," says Burruss. "Mother's Day we had all of our family, my mom, my aunts, we had a big cookout. During the summer and spring mostly is when I'll have a get-together." Burruss adds: "No, I haven't hosted any party here with the 'Housewives' cast members, actually the only ones who have been here are Kim and Lisa.

"Sonja Strayhand Interiors helped me with the dining room, bedroom, sunroom, living room and my favorite little bathroom," explains Burruss. "It wasn't like she dictated to me what all needed to be in the house. I knew in my dining room (pictured) I wanted to have one of those benches. I would do tear-outs from mags and then she would take my tear-outs and go find a whole bunch of different things that fit the direction that I liked."

In the [master] bedroom the ceiling was flat, now I have five [ceiling] trays," offers Burruss, who says the huge movie screen that descends in front of a mirror that faces the custom bed is among the fun things she's done to the home since buying it in 1998.

"I've always been a fan of faux decor because of Tobey Sanders (of FauxDecor) before she started her business. I was like her guinea pig that she would experiment on," comments Burruss. Sanders created the lusterstone faux treatment in the master bath (pictured) and guest rooms. "I totally renovated my bathroom, put stone in there, changed the tub, it looks like a whole new house compared to what it was," adds Burruss.

"The funny thing is when I was talking to the producer," recalls Burruss when she was first approached by Bravo to do the 'Housewives' reality show, "I told her from the jump I'm not the type that likes to waste money, because I believe in security. I don't believe in constantly blowing money for the sake of blowing money. If you think I'm gonna be on this show spending thousands on Dior and this and that, you got the wrong person." Even this tasteful half-bath reflects her frugal sensibility.

"Riley's room is her castle," admits Burruss. "All her friends hang out there. She's 7. Pink is her favorite color. Some people love it, some are like 'it's too much.' The pink is really over-the-top-pink but I definitely think it's cute."

"A.J. and I had a lot of great times here with the kids," reflects Burruss about her ex-fiance Ashley "A.J." Jewell, who died last month from complications arising from injuries sustained during a physical altercation. "I'd be cooking on the grill and he'd get out there and go swimming with the kids. One or two times I did jump in there. The kids love swimming. The pool is what sold me on the house." Pictured is the sunroom, one of her favorite rooms.

Burruss, a Grammy-winning songwriter and singer, displays her awards in the studio she built in her guest house. "Shortly after [a] party here a few years ago, somebody broke in and took my plaques," shares Burruss. "Some couldn't be replaced, for instance the TLC plaque for their 'FanMail' album." The collection of stolen original plaques were recently returned by a `Real Housewives' viewer who saw the episode with Burruss and A.J. installing replacement plaques.

"When that episode [aired] a woman called a radio station to say she had my plaques. Isn't that crazy!? For the last couple of years she's had my plaques on her wall," laughs Burruss." She just decided she wanted me to have them back. She was a nice lady; no, she didn't ask for an autograph," offers Burruss. "I wanted to say to her, 'why would you have my plaques on your wall?' She had her children with her so I wasn't going to give her the third degree, I was just happy to get them back."

After the tragic murder of Kandi Burruss' fiance, AJ Jewell, Kim Zolciak has shared that the entire cast of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," despite their differences, have come together to support Kandi. Zolciak befriended the newest housewife which led to a new and improved version of her single, "Tardy for the Party." The singer also opens up about her relationship with Big Papa.

Check out the full interview after the jump.

ESSENCE.COM: How is Kandi doing? Have you spoken to her?
KIM ZOLCIAK:
I spoke with her mom and texted her just to let her know I'm here. I was one of the first to find out and I called the other ladies. Everybody has been fantastic but it's unfortunate that it takes a tragedy to bring us all together. We were able to put all our stuff on the back burner and come together for Kandi. It's not something that I ever thought would happen, no matter how tragic the situation.

ESSENCE.COM: What was your interaction with A.J like?
ZOLCIAK:
He actually called me last week and I never called him back, which sucks. I adored him. He was such a great guy. He was actually with Big Papa the night I got engaged. I hated that people have this bad impression of him because he had so many children. He was a great father and he was great with Riley [Kandi's 7-year-old daughter] and he loved Kandi.

ESSENCE.COM: How do you think this will change the show?
ZOLCIAK:
At the end of the day, it makes you realize how precious life is. Sheree pulling my hair is so trivial and doesn't even matter at this point. The dynamics have changed us as a family, because that's really what we are even though we've fought—it has put things into perspective for all of us. I adore Kandi and I know how much she appreciates all the positive reinforcement. We'll get her through this.

ESSENCE.COM: There's been some buzz about why you didn't show up to Kandi's performance. What happened?
ZOLCIAK:
My daughter Brielle was sick and that's when swine flu was going rampant. I don't have a nanny at night. I told Kandi I wasn't able to come. I'm not that kind of friend to just not show up. Kandi has been an incredible friend to me, and the way it came across was that I didn't make any effort and that's just not true.

ESSENCE.COM: How's "Tardy for the Party" doing? It sounds like a breakout hit.
ZOLCIAK:
I'm so excited. We're in the top 100 on iTunes and No. 3 on the dance charts. The single is doing fantastic. The experience was worth a million dollars because Kandi got me through my biggest fear. She can turn dirt into diamonds. She definitely went out on a limb to work with me. I always said I wanted to be a one-hit wonder but I am working on another single.

ESSENCE.COM: And when is the wig line coming out?
ZOLCIAK:
I've joined with a company called Pop Wigs who will manufacture and distribute the wigs. It's a lot more work than I ever anticipated. I'm working on everything from trademarking to the packaging. I'm really proud of the wigs, so by December people will be able to do pre-orders and we can send them out by January.

ESSENCE.COM: So what's the scoop? Are you or aren't you still engaged to Big Papa?
ZOLCIAK:
I am not engaged to Big Papa! I got a commitment ring last year and so when I got this new ring, I was led to believe that his divorce was final. Who gives someone a massive rock and makes this commitment if he wasn't serious? I found out that I was still on the same merry-go-round. If there is one thing I have discovered about myself from doing this show it is that I'm just far too trusting. I'm actually dating someone new and I'm extremely happy. He's my age, from California and cute as a button. I gave Papa almost four years of my life, so now I'm just trying to move on.

ESSENCE.COM: What's the most important lesson you've learned from that experience?
ZOLCIAK:
I need to learn not to take everything at face value. I believe everything that people tell me. I wanted to believe that he was going through the steps for us to be together. I'm not a home wrecker because my husband did it to me. I would never intentionally do that to someone. I was planning my future and so excited because he was the love of my life. But as time went on, I started to wonder, why is this taking so long? I realized that I needed to really sit down and figure this out.

ESSENCE.COM: Have you ever had any interaction with his wife?
ZOLCIAK:
Never, but she knew. At the end of the day, I want someone who has the same moral values that I do. The harsh reality is when you look at your relationship after so many years and it's not what you thought, it's very devastating. But you know what, I'm happier than I've been in a long time.

ESSENCE.COM: So there's no chance you two will reconcile?
ZOLCIAK:
I will never go back. When I'm done, I'm done. I have no desire to have anything further with him.

"The fiance of Kandi Burruss, a cast member on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," was killed Friday evening at a northwest Atlanta strip club, according to WSB Atlanta.

Burruss' fiance, A.J. Jewell, died from a head injury sustained in a brawl at the Body Tap club, located at 1271 Marietta Blvd.

Burruss' publicist Lisa Nelson confirmed to WSB that the actress has been informed of the incident and said the family asked for privacy.

Police said it's unclear what prompted the fight. No arrests have been made."

We are extremely saddened to hear this unfortunate news. Just from watching the show AJ seemed like a good guy with a genuine spirit. The fact that this was an act of violence makes it all the more tragic. We pray that justice will be served and that we will continue to do better to end violence in our communities. We at MDM send our condolences to Kandi, A.J.'s family and friends and most importantly his children. They will be in our hearts and prayers and we ask that you keep them in yours as well.

*UPDATE* Suspect Arrested and Charged With Voluntary Manslaughter. More details after the jump.

"Atlanta police charged a strip club employee with voluntary manslaughter Saturday in the beating death of the former fiancé of the newest member of the reality television show The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Ashley “A.J.” Jewell, who was engaged to Kandi Burruss until last August, died of massive head injuries at Piedmont Hospital. He was fatally injured in a "one-on-one" fight with Fredrick Richardson Friday night, police said.

Richardson also was injured as the two exchanged blows outside the strip bar, the Body Tap Club, Friday night. Richardson was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he will remain until doctors say he can be discharged. Then Richardson will be taken to the Fulton County Jail, according to police spokesman Officer James Polite.

Polite said detectives were still “trying to figure out [what happened]. We had a pretty good number of witnesses that are being cooperative.”

But the cause of the fight in the parking lot of the club in the 1200 block of Marietta Boulevard was still not known Saturday, Polite said.

Jewell was part-owner of Body Tap, a club popular with celebrities.

Burruss was flooded with condolences on her social networking pages on Twitter.com and MySpace.com.

Burruss thanked friends for their condolences and asked for prayers for Jewell’s six children.

But she asked to be left alone. “im just in one of those moods where i dont wanna talk, i dont wanna b held & told its gonna b ok. i just wanna cry myself 2 sleep, alone,” she wrote on a Twitter.com post.

She also posted that she had to get some rest before her uncle’s funeral on Saturday.

Kim Zolciak, a fellow "Housewives" castmate, said in a phone interview from California Saturday morning how "disgusted" she was that someone could take a life like this.

"My heart and prayers are with Kandi, AJ's children and family," she said. "I can't imagine the loss they're feeling. I'll be there for my dear friend Kandi."

Zolciak added, "I adored A.J. He will definitely be missed."

Burruss, who has a daughter, joined the other Atlanta "housewives" this season as they focus on their status, their clothes and who’s arguing and why.

Jewell, as Burruss’ fiancĂ©, appeared occasionally the show. In some episodes the 33-year-old Burruss argued with her mother over her relationship with Jewell.

Burruss is an award-winning singer-songwriter and a solo performer. She was a member of the now-disbanded R&B group Xscape.

According to an interview last month with the entertainment Web site Essence.com, Burruss and Jewell had taken a “hiatus” from their relationship but remained friends while they worked on their issues.

Rodney Ho contributed to this article."
